What do you think of the Flex Certified Developer Exams?

This question comes in from Pete about the Flex Certified Developer exams.

You got any thoughts on the Adobe Flex Certified Developer exam? Best way to approach it? Is it worth taking?

Certification is a tricky subject, for sure. A lot of developers will say certification is meaningless. But, I think all else being equal it can definitely help you get past the "gatekeeper" in HR.

How do you prepare for the exam? I'd start by checking out this page on the Adobe web site. Pay particular attention to the PDF guide.

You can also check out the Attest prep software. There is both a free and paid version of it. In the past I have found such test taking software to be awesome for exam prep.

I personally haven't taken the Flex exam, so can't comment on the content. Anyone have anything to ad?

I do like fielding questions from the audience, so feel free to ask them or stop by a Flextras Friday Lunch session and ask me in person. I you want some personal attention, you hire me for some personal attention over at www.asktheflexpert.com

Thijs's Gravatar I thought it was widely regarded as something for newbies that don't have anything, like a portfolio, to present to their potential employers.

Jeffry Houser's Gravatar That opinion is a new one for me. But many high level developers think they are crap which does nothing to accurately distinguish the skill level of a developer.

Jason Fincanon's Gravatar I agree with what you said about the HR gatekeeper. It's like a nice little shiny trinket on your resume. I think it means more to the people who are paying your salary than it means to other developers for sure. (And this is coming from someone who has the most recent Flex with AIR cert)

Marcin's Gravatar I did the Flex 3 exam last year, mainly just for me rather than for any real need for it. The exam/certification itself might be "pointless", but the process of preparing for it was very useful - it forced me to learn about and explore areas of the Flex/AIR SDK that I hadn't before, even though I consider myself an experienced developer.

So even if you don't take the exam, have a look through the requirements and read up on each point in the Flex docs, you might find something new and interesting that will help you in your day-to-day work!

(PS: I passed with 92%, not sure where I went wrong, must've been some of those oddly worded questions that every cert exam has)
