Is CFEclipse being updated?

I routinely get e-mails of people asking questions. Usually they read one of my recent articles, or (less frequently these days) or one of my books.

If one person asked, perhaps someone else had the same question. So, I figure I'll start posting these questions and responses here. ( Not much different than Rays "Ask the Jedi" series ).

I was recently asked about CFEclipse, after someone read my "Making the Switch to CFEclipse" article in CFDJ.

I have a concern when I browse to http://www.cfeclipse.org. The site looks unmanaged and not recently updated. The latest build is now 9 months old. Their site gives me a bad feeling about future releases and documentation. Any insights?

Also, I am willing to "make the switch", but not unless I can find the Eclipse equivalent of site management. I expected some form of support for connection to my source via FTP or RDS. Again, any insights?

First off, CFEclipse is updated all the time. You can download the nightly builds to get the most up to date version. I know it has changes different than the latest stable release. I also know that New Atlanta has given some financial backing to the project (Although i don't know the extent of it).

I personally prefer to use the latest stable release (but that's just preference).

To address the FTP issue: CFEclipse is built on top of Eclipse, and there are a wide range of Plug-ins for Eclipse. These include FTP plugins. I haven't researched them, though. FTP Support (or lack thereof) is a common complaint I hear from people moving from Homesite / Dreamweaver. I would not expect FTP Support to be added directly to CFEclipse, due to the availability of other plugin.

For RDS support you can download ColdFusion Extensions to Flex Builder 2.0 on the labs site. I've installed the plugin, but honestly don't use RDS, so have not actually tested it.

And finally, I suggested that to get the latest and greatest from the CFEclipse team, he should check out the member weblogs. The web logs get updated significantly more often than the CFEclipse site.

Do you have more questions for me? I'll add an "Add the Author" form on this site.

Richard Davies's Gravatar Having recently switched from Dreamweaver to CFEclipse, I agree that FTP support is one of the biggest drawbacks. I've looked for an FTP plugin but the only one I've found is the FTP/WebDAV plugin that you can download from the Eclipse web site.

Unfortunately, this plugin appears to be buggy and I've been unable to get it to work. If anyone knows of a better FTP plugin, please let me know! Thank you.
