New computer..

I just bought a server computer from the Dell outlet factory. My intent, next year, is to bring my development hosting in-house. I pay ~$50 a month for a CF5 dev server shared hosting, and it has become pretty useless. I rarely do anything on version 5 anymore.

As servers go, this is nothing fantastic, but it will suit my needs.

1 gig of RAM, 160MB hard drive, Dual 2.8Ghz processors.

There are some potential hidden costs:

  1. Upgrading my internet connection so I have a static IP. I'm still torn. Should I switch to cable or keep DSL?
  2. I'm running out of space for my router. Maybe I'll make my laptop go 100% wireless.
  3. The KVM switch is dying, if not already dead. I don't think I can plug another machine into it. I should get a new one.
  4. I may have to redo the electric in my house / home office. This is the reason I put off doing this earlier this year.

I'll move all my development off the server, graciously donated by Valdog, and leave that for production stuff.

I'm estimating a savings of ~$700 per year moving forward, and I should make up the cost of my initial expenditures in ~2 years. ( Not counting redoing the electrical in my house )
